This department was started with the dream of creating skillful and willful women journalists through teaching, training in communication in the academic year 2015 – 2018 by the tireless efforts taken by the then Principal Dr. C. Vijayambiga M.Sc., M.Phil., Ph.D as a result of the strong ground work taken in the year 2014 – 2015 by getting the permission from the Government (G.O. No: 221 Hr. Edn (G1), Dated : 23. 12. 2014) and through the affiliation (MSU / R / CD / Fur. Affi. / RAGCFW / 2015 -2016) got from Manonmanium Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli.

The department grew further under the leadership of the two successful Principals Dr. P. Parvathi M.Sc., M.Phil., Ph.D and Dr. C. V. Mythili M.Sc., M.Phil., Ph.D with the needed basic infrastructure. The first batch came out in flying colours with five gold medals in the university level and hundred percent of pass results.

This course focuses on Fundamentals of Journalism, History of Journalism, News reporting, News editing, Writing for media, Basic writing skills, Advertising, Public relations, Radio Journalism, Broadcast Journalism, Online Journalism, Media Law and Ethics, Sports Journalism, Science Journalism, Media Culture and Society, Media Management, Development Journalism etc.,

Among the Government colleges of Tamilnadu this course is offered only in three Government colleges out of which three are coeducational institutions while our college is the only Government women’s college to offer this course from undergraduate level.

The students of this department get training in writing and reading skills for news by participating in classes and various workshops conducted on and off the campus. They visit the nearby media industries too.

In the Southern part of Tamilnadu only this college offers this course in a very affordable and minimum fee.
